Awareness of God

Lesson 5

Kaddesh (Holy One)

Definition:

Kaddesh refers to being sanctified. Jehovah who sanctifies. Being holy because Jehovah is God. Primarily it points to being set apart or separate. God is set apart from other gods as being Holy, and above all else in the universe.

Meaning:

In today's time we set aside certain days to honor the birthdays of significant people in our history. The Jews set aside the Sabbath because God rested in it. Our worship of God is to take on that extra emphasis of both a time set apart to understand His Holiness and a separating of our desires to live a life honoring Him.

Scripture Support:

Leviticus 20:7,8
Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the Lord your God, And ye shall keep my statutes and do them: I am the Lord which sanctify you.

I Samuel 2:2
There is none holy as the Lord: for there is non beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.

Isaiah 40:25
To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.

Isaiah 43:3
For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee.

Isaiah 44:6
Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last, and beside me there is no God.

Isaiah 48:17
Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.

Conclusion:

Only God is worthy of worship, for He alone is holy. Holiness refers to being set apart.

Application:

I will set aside thirty minutes each day to spend time worshipping God and reading His Word to better understand how He would have me to live.
